What does Optimize iPhone Storage do with iCloud Photos?

GallerySort editorial · Updated

What the setting actually does

Apple describes the setting like this: when Optimize iPhone Storage is on, all your full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud in their original formats, with storage-saving versions kept on your iPhone. Apple adds that it is turned on by default, so you may be using it without ever having chosen it.

That means the library you scroll on your phone can look complete while the biggest files live in iCloud. It is a way to fit a large library on a phone, not a way to make photos disappear. Apple’s page does not give numbers for how much space this saves, so we will not either; check iPhone Storage on your own device.

Where to see and change it

Apple’s steps for switching it off are: open Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, tap Photos, tap iPhone Storage, then tap Download and Keep Originals. Menu wording has changed between iOS versions, so if your screen differs, check Apple’s current guide for your version.

Before you change it, make sure your iPhone actually has room for the full-size library. Apple’s page does not say how your phone will behave if there is not enough space, so check Settings, General, iPhone Storage first.

  1. Open Settings and check General, then iPhone Storage, for free space.
  2. Go to Settings, your name, iCloud, then Photos.
  3. Tap iPhone Storage to see the current choice.
  4. Choose Download and Keep Originals only if the phone has room for the whole library.

Optimizing storage is not the same as deleting

The two things people confuse are freeing space and deleting photos. Optimizing keeps your library; deleting a photo removes it. Apple says that with iCloud Photos, a photo you delete is deleted on all your devices signed in to the same Apple Account, and that deleted items stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days.

If a photo matters, do not rely on a single copy anywhere. iCloud Photos keeps your devices in sync, which is convenient but not an independent backup. Our guide on backing up before deleting explains how to make a copy that a mistake cannot reach.

The other limit: iCloud storage

Optimizing uses your iCloud storage to hold the originals, so the real limit is your iCloud plan. Apple notes that if your uploaded photos and videos exceed your storage plan, you can upgrade to iCloud+. In Photos, the status icon near your account picture shows when iCloud is almost full, full, or paused.

If that is your situation, read our guide on iCloud storage full before buying more or deleting in a hurry. Moving to a larger plan and deleting what you do not need are different decisions.

Where sorting fits in

Optimize iPhone Storage handles how files are stored; it does not decide which photos are worth keeping. That is a separate job, and a smaller, intentional library is easier to browse whichever setting you use.

GallerySort lets you swipe to keep or delete and tap an album to file a photo. It does not change your iCloud setting, and deleting through it follows the same sync rules as deleting in Photos.
